Whatever is going on with the women at Wimbledon? Can you remember those days of demure little dresses, when the balls were white and so were the knickers? Where is the style, the panache, the quiet savouring of success and humility in defeat?

The Wimbledon we once knew has gone with the wind, because Britain’s best-loved tennis tournament has become an orgy of grunting and ghastly behaviour more suited to a sink estate than the manicured lawns of SW19.

People will behave as badly as we allow them to get away with, and, boy, are they getting away with it at Wimbledon. Some competitors in the ‘ladies’ tournament turn up in appalling outfits, covered in slogans, and wearing chav jewellery.

They scowl, make aggressive, thrust-the-fist gestures and grumble that they’re not on Centre Court. Quite a few clearly have not bothered to colour their roots or even wash their hair, in spite of knowing they will be watched by a worldwide audience of millions.

Bad clothes, bad hair, bad manners. Sometimes it’s hard to know if we’re watching Wimbledon or Glastonbury. Take 21-year-old Victoria Azarenka, who arrived on court wearing earphones, moving her head in time to the music like a teenager, and chewing gum, which she then appeared to spit into a towel. If she lost a point during the match, she mouthed off in a hideous fashion.

Now, I don’t know what she was saying because it was in her native language, but you could tell by her expression that it wasn’t: ‘Oh come along, Victoria, try to do better next time.’ She repeatedly threw her towel at the ball boy. Could she not just stand still for a moment, hand the towel over and say ‘Thank you’? When I see a player like that I always think: ‘I do hope she loses’.

And talking of losing, good riddance to the Williams sisters, I say. What an unsavoury pair.

She had a face you could chop wood with, and snarled at the press after she lost the match, which was about as ill-advised as the gold hot pants under that playsuit and the peculiar bra, which resembled a surgical truss that had crept northwards.

Her sister Serena (was ever a name more ill-chosen?) appeared on court in huge and hideous jewellery, and with ultra-long, Essex-scrubber fingernails, painted in different colours but each one glittery and unspeakably vile.

You can forget all about frilly knickers, or even just a nice pair of white sports pants, because today’s players, like little girls trying to shock, seem determined to show the world their drawers — the flashier and more vulgar the better.

The French teenager Tatiana Golovin famously surprised Wimbledon’s old guard with crimson hotpants under her tennis whites. Miss Golovin, then 19, claimed the pants did not breach the ‘strict’ dress code because they were higher than the hem of her skirt, although we were all treated to repeated views of this look at-me item of clothing.

She even said: ‘Red is the colour that proves you’re strong and confident, so I’m happy.’ In other words, knickers to the lot of you! She also promised she would keep wearing them as long as she kept winning, saying: ‘For now, for these two weeks, it’s going to be red. I think it’s fun — it’s part of my personality.’ How ridiculous. Could her mother not have had a word?

Any rules of modesty in the women’s game seem to have been thrown out years ago, outdated principles sacrificed on the altar of TV ratings.

If anyone had asked Seventies legend Chris Evert to get her kit off for a lads’ mag, she would probably have slapped them. Now, female players apparently consider it an honour.

Have you seen that shot of Swiss player Emmanuelle Gagliardi lifting her dress and scratching her rump? Anyone who knows anything about photography will realise that the bum-scratching went on for far too long, but long enough for a photographer to get the shot — and therefore boost her chances of getting into the papers.

‘So, my bum ’az been on TV? Nooo. Was it? I ’ad no idea. Call my agent.’ Miss Gagliardi is 34 and should put it away.

Every year you read stories about Wimbledon’s dress code being ‘famously strict’. Really? Clothes are supposed to be predominantly white (a woolly phrase which is not being heeded, see red drawers paragraph above). Admittedly, Serena Williams wore a white dress — but she also wore enormous black shorts and a black baseball cap, presumably to match her black mood.

Any logos on clothes, says the strict dress code, should be ‘discreet’. Er, excuse me, but Marion Bartoli was on court on Tuesday wearing a dress with two large logos over each breast, both for cosmetic companies. What do cosmetic companies have to do with sport? And although Bartoli is well turned out and popular, she stuffs tennis balls up her drawers, as does Tatiana Golovin. A disgusting habit.

And as for the grunting, well. I have decided that if Maria Sharapova gets into the final, I’m not going to watch.

All that squealing like a pig stuck in mud, making noises more suited to the bedroom (and even then you’d be thrown out of any respectable hotel), must be deeply irritating for her opponent and sends me into a foaming frenzy.

Every year, people grumble about falling standards at Wimbledon, about grunting, about tantrums, screaming, coloured clothes creeping in, logos being too big, too bright, too obvious. And every year what happens? Sweet Fanny Adams.

Have a look at this recent quote, from a Wimbledon official, about underwear.

He said: ‘Some players are violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the law. Players can wear any colour undergarments they like, but it has always been a Wimbledon convention to wear white, especially for the ladies. If they wear red shorts, there is nothing we can do.’

Yes they can. Speaking as someone who was ejected from the Wimbledon press box 30 years ago for not wearing a bra (under my T-shirt, I hasten to add), there is plenty they can do.

They can email the agents of the ‘ladies’ involved, reminding them of the dress code and saying that screaming, wearing earphones and chewing gum will not be tolerated. They can go and see the players in the locker room before the match, and tell them if their clobber is unsuitable.

It will be embarrassing, but just do it. If the Williams sisters want to throw their teddy in the corner, that’s fine.

Wimbledon is wonderful, we love it. But we’d love it even more if people stuck to the rules, wore the right clothes and behaved themselves a bit better.

No, actually, a lot better.

Otherwise, we’re all going to hell in a handcart. And only the feeble old fossils at the All England Club can change that.
